Creating a piece of jewellery to commission is one of my favourite activities.
I enjoy working with a client to design a piece that reflects their ideas and preferences, and/or those of the intended recipient.

I specialise in creating individual pieces of jewellery inspired by the person who is going to wear it. My work covers abstract designs reflecting the wearer's personality, like the necklace on the right, to incorporating the wearer's hobby or interest, such as reading, bird-watching, a period in history, a favourite flower, a regular walk or special view, a cherished memory, or an architectural detail...

If you are thinking of commissioning jewellery from me. Here is how the process goes:

Step 1: Contact me by email or phone to tell me about the piece that you have in mind.

Step 2: I'll contact you back to find out more about it.

We'll consider style, metal, the wearer, embellishments, what's technically possible, and your budget. I appreciate that describing a piece of jewellery that is in your head in technical terms can be tricky, so I'll help you to describe your ideas and you are also welcome to email me a link to a website or photos of jewellery to give me a clearer idea of what you like. I don't copy other jewellers' designs, but can create a unique design for you with a similar 'feel' to it.

Step 3: I create two or three draft designs and email / send / show them to you to consider, along with a ball-park price for the piece.

Step 4: You tell me which aspects you like, if any, and which you don't. It is still fine at this stage to create a completely new design, but please be aware that changes may increase the price!

Step 5: You provide me with sizing details such as length of necklace or ring size. This can be a very exciting part of the process, as if the jewellery is to be a surprise then you will need to find a way to secretly do this without the recipient knowing! I can provide ideas and equipment for this.

Step 6: Once I have the size, I create a paper model of your piece of jewellery to show you. I will also provide you with a maximum price and the length of time it will take to make in silver or gold. I can make to tight deadlines, but the more notice the better. At this stage we agree to go ahead with the project, or not.

Step 7: If going ahead, you give me a deposit of 50% of the maximum price to cover the cost of the materials (cash, BACS, cheque or Paypal). This deposit is non-returnable, as I order the materials for commissions individually and straight away. But if disaster strikes (divorce / lost job / serious illness etc) I am open to considering what we can do to resolve the situation.

Step 8: I make your jewellery. Each separate piece of jewellery weighing over 7.78g in silver or 1g in gold has to be sent away to the Assay Office in Edinbugh, Scotland, with which I am registered, to be officially hallmarked. You may also wish for it to be hallmarked anyway to commemorate a special year. This process can take up to 10 days on top of the making time.

Step 9: I'll contact you when your jewellery is ready. You can either make an appointment to collect it from my studio, or I can meet up or deliver it to you if you live / work locally, or I am happy to post it to you if you cover the cost of Royal Mail Special Delivery (signed-for and insured). I will tell you the exact cost of the final piece and expect you to pay the balance (final price minus your deposit) on collection or prior to posting. You can pay by cash, cheque, Paypal or online BACS transfer. Sorry, no credit card facility as yet because mobile phone signals don't work consistently here!

Step 10: That's it! It's quite a straightforward process.
